Effect of hydrogen sulphide (H2S)
Effects of hydrogen sulphide
1. Odour problems
- Sensitisation of population, > 0.1 ppm H2S of wastewater channels
2. Sulphuric acid corrosion
- Concrete removing rate up to 10 mm per year
- High investment costs to repair
3. Health risk
- Toxicity is comparable to cyanide
4. Reducing of biological stage of sewage plants
- Increasing of bulking sludge within aeration tanks of waste water treatment plants
Toxicity
A solution must be found, how the danger can be permanently prevented!
Consequences
Without H2S monitoring the chemical dosage in waste water treatment can lead to:
- Ineffective treatment through under-dosing
- Overdosage and waste of expensive treatment chemicals
- Unnecessary wear of collection systems
